An Illinois inmate has created a new conventional word game called BattleCross consisting of rules that transform any printed crossword puzzle from a one-person activity into a fun and challenging two-player competition. The object of BattleCross is to battle your opponent for the highest score at the completion of the crossword puzzle. Each player takes turns solving clues for points. Each letter in a clue's solution is worth one point, but you can gain extra points for solving multiple intersecting clues in what is called a Cluster. You also gain extra points for correcting your opponent's wrong solutions, but you can easily lose points for violating the game's rules.

BattleCross adds a new twist to an old favorite and incorporates popular elements of other famous games, i.e. the strategic anticipation of Chess; the bluffing of Poker; and the tactical scoring opportunities of Scrabble. BattleCross takes smarts, timing, alertness and a bit of cunning and combines them all into the skill of solving any standard crossword puzzle found in any newspaper, magazine or crossword puzzle book at any any size. So whether you are new to solving crossword puzzles or an expert solver, if you enjoy word games and mental sparring then you'll love BattleCross.

BattleCross was created by Mr. Winfred Oliver, an Illinois inmate. Oliver has become a Buddhist since his incarceration and credits this spiritual practice with helping him turn negativity into positivity and tap into his creativity in developing the game. Oliver has conducted bracket-style BattleCross tournaments at the prison to playtest the rules effectiveness, coolness and fun factor of the game. Oliver wants your most valuable feedback, too, and invites you to "test drive" BattleCross and tell him what you think by receiving a free copy of the rules. If BattleCross is well received Oliver hopes to create an exclusive BattleCross puzzle book and eventually look into developing a digital version for play on personal computers as well.
