Hi, I'm Joe. Thanks for reading my ad, I often wonder what motivates people to write inmates? Heck, most of my family don't stay in touch. Being gay from a conservative Catholic family doesn't help matters. My "loved ones" excuses, "No one writes letters anymore," or, "I'm just not the writing type," are especially offensive to me.

Well guess what? I know there are good people who like to write letters out there, and I hope to tap into that network of support thru this ad.

I'm not looking for perfect people, or those who claim to be whole. I hope to make a joyful difference in someone's life. I want sincere, kind people who can accept me as I am, warts and all. I welcome anyone who may want to correspond with me.

My background is rather humorous. I grew up wanting to become a priest, and spent 1-1/2 years in a seminary. Through much discernment, I left. My first job after that was in a Catholic nursing home, where a young nun showed sexual interest in me. If you think homosexuality caused me guilt, imagine the conflict that damn nun put me through? Yikes. I joined the Navy soon after that, hoping to work on a submarine, trying to get as far away from God as possible. Ironically, I failed sub school and was recommended to work in the chaplain's office because of my religious background. I worked overseas with the marines in Okinawa, Japan.

My life took many twists and turns after the military. I moved to Hawaii in 1994, hoping for a new beginning. Unfortunately I made some poor choices, and one night took the life of an innocent man. I turned myself in hours later, and have done my best to take full responsibility.

I do the best I can to stay positive and hopeful. Prison life is very superficial, and true friends are hard to find. I'd love to share my interests, hopes and dreams with you. I'm sure you'll find I'm not your average inmate. Take care, always. Joe.
