During my 22 years outside, I was very outgoing: traveling, sports, outdoors, concerts and events, etc. In prison I’m a little more restricted — so I exercise daily, pray a lot, and spend most days helping other inmates in the Law Library. Cannot seem to live without music and nonfiction books. I tend to gravitate towards upbeat individuals and love making people laugh. I believe that each person you encounter in life may teach you something. And for better or for worse, deliberately choose to see the best in others. I’m a strong believer in God, I love reading and writing, I really enjoy gaining knowledge too. I believe what the bible says in Proverbs 23:7 “For as he [a person] thinks in his heart, so is he.” Our mind is the leader or forerunner of all actions. Our actions are a direct result of our thoughts. If we have a negative mind, we will have a negative life. I’m not proud of my past but I was trapped in a vicious cycle of drug abuse and crime for nearly two decades, and during the course of my struggles, I have lost a great deal of valuable and productive years of my life. The saying that everything happens for a reason can only apply to all of us. I came to prison because I made some very bad decisions. Not all prisons are made of locks and keys, high walls, fences and barbed wire. There are some prisons that are within the battlefields of our own minds. I wrote this inside of a physical prison with the hope and prayer that I could connect with someone from the outside who might be going through some difficult times.
