My name is Anwar Shahbaz-Lopez and I’m a first time / nonviolent drug offender. I was arrested back in 2013 on conspiracy charges and was out on bond for four years. I turned myself into FCI Ashland in 2018 and was transferred to Milan earlier this year.

Since getting here early 2021, I have enrolled at Jackson College to pursue my degree in business administration. Once I get out, I will focus on my non-profit organization I founded in 2015 called Street Dreams Chicago; teaching underserved communities the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.

How’s it going? 😊 My name is Justin, and I’m a Southern California Native. My mom always told me that she named me Justin because the name rhymed with “justice”, and she’d hoped that I’d be an attorney one day. Though I doubt she ever envisioned me fighting to get myself out of hot water in court (smiling). But I guess that’s just how life goes sometimes.

I’m 46 years old now – and I can’t tell you how much that sucks! Ha! Ha! 😊 Though It’s all good: so long as we don’t “look” it or “feel” it, right? Right! 😊 I’m a Taurus. My ancestry is English, Irish, black, and Cherokee Indian. I have “olive green” – colored eyes. I’m 5’10” tall, and I weigh 195 pounds.

My interests include: rap, R&B, alternative rock, and yeah, I admit, even a bit of “country” music. 😊 I also enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and kids (although I have no kids of my own). I’m in good physical shape and I exercise regularly. I don’t use drugs, smoke, or drink, and never have.

My talents include: singing, dancing (though I admit I’m a bit rusty now. 😊, drawing, writing songs and poetry, amongst others. I formerly worked as a certified office machine and computer repair technician. I’m also a published artist and poet (you can see a few copies of my art posted above), and I’m a formidable chess player.

I’ve been incarcerated for 25 years now; I was initially framed by two crooked cops. I’m currently seeking “clemency” (i.e., sentence reduction and release from prison), from the Colorado Governor. I’ve been told that my chances are excellent. Thus, I could be out of prison before the end of next year (the current Colorado state Governor issues clemencies every year). Therefore, my stated release date is tentative. I’m also a self-taught “Jailhouse Lawyer” and I’m currently challenging my sentences in court, as well – though I believe “clemency” will be my fastest – path to freedom. Wish me luck! 😊

I try to live life based – upon a set of philosophies that I’ve refined over the years. I’m a pretty well-balanced person. I’m kind, courageous, brave, caring, romantic, and adventurous. I’m a dreamer, and I have goals and ambition. I’m not afraid to take chances. I’m also very engaging, and I have a great sense of humor (if you write me and we become friends, I’m gonna’ make you laugh and smile – it’s inevitable! 😊). Also, with the prison’s new “video visits” – system here, I could now, eventually, “visit with any new friends over video camera, from anywhere in the world, any day of the week (like “video chat”).
